Program Overview

Students begin with a strong foundation in core sciences and mathematics, building the theoretical and analytical skills needed to understand nanoscale systems.

In the later years, students choose one of four concentration tracks: Nanomedicine, Bio-Nanotechnology, Nano Chemistry, or Nano Physics. The program places strong emphasis on laboratory-based learning, with most courses including advanced experimental components. Supported by Zewail City’s research institutes, students engage in hands-on research and complete capstone projects linked to real-world scientific and technological challenges.

What Does a Nanoscientist Do?

Nanoscientists study and manipulate materials at extremely small scales to understand their properties and develop new applications. They work in research laboratories and innovation-driven environments, contributing to advances in medicine, materials, energy, electronics, and biotechnology. Their work often bridges scientific discovery and practical solutions, supporting research, development, and emerging technologies.

Potential Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Nanoscience program are prepared for diverse career pathways in research, technology, and innovation-driven sectors. Career opportunities include roles such as:

  • Research & Scientific Roles
Nanomaterials Scientist, Nanophysics Specialist, Nanotechnology Research Associate, Biomedical Nanotechnology Researcher

  • Industry & Applied Science
R&D Chemist (Nano Chemistry), Nano-Medicine Development Specialist, Applications Scientist (Nanotechnology Products), Process Engineer (Nano-Fabrication), Surface Science Analyst, Quality Control Analyst for Nano-Enabled Devices

  • Employment Sectors
Nanomedicine and nano-pharmaceutics, drug delivery and pharmaceutical companies, advanced materials and manufacturing, semiconductors and electronics, biotechnology and bioengineering, and academic or governmental research laboratories.

This foundation also supports progression into postgraduate studies and advanced research careers in nanoscience and related fields.

Accreditation

The University of Science and Technology at Zewail City is officially accredited by the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt.

Key Areas of Study

The Nanoscience program integrates core scientific disciplines to explore matter and phenomena at the nanoscale. Students develop a strong theoretical and experimental foundation through focused study in:

  • Physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics for nanoscale analysis
  • Nanomaterials and surface science
  • Nano-chemistry and nano-physics
  • Bio-nanotechnology and nanomedicine
  • Advanced laboratory techniques and nanoscale characterization
Through these areas, students gain hands-on research experience and apply scientific principles to real-world challenges in science, technology, and innovation.

Learning Outcomes

By the time of graduation, Nanoscience students will be able to:

  • Apply principles of mathematics, chemistry, physics, and core sciences to identify, analyze, and solve scientific problems at the nanoscale.
  • Design or formulate nanomaterials, systems, or experimental procedures to meet defined scientific or technological needs.
  • Conduct experiments, test hypotheses, analyze data, and apply scientific judgment to draw valid conclusions.
  • Communicate scientific ideas, methods, and findings effectively to both specialized and non-specialized audiences.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional responsibility while understanding the global, economic, environmental, and societal impact of nanoscience applications.
  • Work effectively within multidisciplinary teams by setting goals, managing tasks, and addressing uncertainty.
  • Synthesize, fabricate, and characterize nanomaterials with properties tailored to specific scientific and technological applications.

Graduation Requirements

To earn a Bachelor of Science in Nanoscience, students must complete 130 credit hours through a structured study pathway that combines foundational sciences, specialized nanoscience training, and research experience.

Degree Structure
  • Foundation Year (34 Cr): A mandatory first year that builds strong foundations in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and academic communication, preparing students for advanced scientific study.
  • University Requirements (16 Cr): General education courses that develop communication skills, ethical awareness, and social responsibility.
  • School of Science Requirements (32 Cr): Core courses in mathematics and basic sciences, complemented by laboratory training and a supervised internship.
  • Major Requirements (28 Cr): Core nanoscience courses covering materials science, nanomaterial synthesis, characterization techniques, and research lab rotations.
  • Concentration Requirements (54 Cr): Advanced, in-depth study in one of four specialization tracks:
    - Nanomedicine
    - Nanophysics
  • - Bio-Nanotechnology
  • - Nanochemistry

Students declare their major after completing the Foundation Year and are advised to work closely with academic advisors to ensure timely progression and graduation.
