City Structure
Introduction
Zewail City was designed as an integrated ecosystem that connects education, research, and innovation—ensuring that discovery does not remain within academic walls, but translates into real-world value. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic research priorities, the City supports scientific advancement that responds to pressing challenges, from health and energy to frontier science and emerging technologies. This model reflects Dr. Zewail’s belief that sustainable development is built through industries and solutions powered by research outcomes, serving society and contributing to national progress.
The University of Science and Technology
At the heart of Zewail City is the University of Science and Technology—built on an interdisciplinary model that breaks traditional boundaries between fields.
Rather than operating through conventional schools or departments, the University offers integrated academic programs designed to meet evolving societal needs and the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Students can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees across emerging areas, including engineering, science, computational sciences, artificial intelligence, and business.
The University welcomed its first cohort in Fall 2013, with graduating classes since Summer 2017.
Research Institutes
The University is closely connected to Zewail City’s Research Institutes—the second component of the City—where each academic program is mapped to active research areas.
From the undergraduate level, students are encouraged to engage with the Institutes and participate in applied research alongside expert teams.
Zewail City’s five Research Institutes are equipped with advanced capabilities that support world-class scientific work, including a four-dimensional microscope that visualizes the motion of atoms and molecules in space and time.
The City also features a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility for fabricating miniaturized devices, as well as advanced biomedical laboratories focused on genomics, stem cells, and cancer research.
The Valley of Science and Technology
Research outcomes are translated into real-world value through the Valley of Science and Technology—the third component of Zewail City.
The Valley supports intellectual property protection, identifies community and market needs, and guides both the University and the Research Institutes in incubating spin-off companies and startups.
It also facilitates knowledge transfer and strengthens collaboration with industry to ensure innovation contributes to society and economic growth.
