Program Overview

The Environmental Engineering program prepares students to address complex environmental challenges by integrating scientific principles with engineering solutions that reduce environmental impact and support long-term sustainability.

The curriculum offers a strong interdisciplinary foundation that combines environmental science and engineering, systems engineering, water and wastewater engineering, and environmental planning and management. Through laboratory work, design projects, and field experience, students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and hands-on expertise—equipping them to respond effectively to evolving environmental, industrial, and societal needs.

What Does an Environmental Engineer Do?

Environmental engineers design and manage systems that protect the environment and support public health. They work on pollution control, water and waste management, and sustainable resource use. Graduates contribute across sectors such as environmental consulting, water and wastewater treatment, renewable energy, manufacturing, governmental agencies, and sustainability-focused industries.

Potential Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Environmental Engineering program are prepared for diverse career pathways across consulting, industry, public institutions, and international development organizations.

Environmental & Sustainability Consulting

Students engage with key areas that prepare them to address environmental challenges across technical, industrial, and societal contexts, including:

  • Environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental planning
  • Air quality, emissions control, and pollution mitigation
  • Carbon management, decarbonization, and climate resilience
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA), resource efficiency, and ESG advisory
  • Environmental risk assessment, compliance, and remediation.

Industry & Infrastructure Sectors

(Energy, manufacturing, petrochemicals, waste management, and utilities)

  • Environmental and process integration engineering
  • Water and wastewater treatment system design
  • Waste-to-energy, waste valorization, and circular economy solutions
  • Environmental health, safety, and risk management
  • Energy efficiency, renewable energy, and emissions control systems

Government & Public Sector

  • Environmental regulation, compliance, and enforcement
  • Urban water, sanitation, and waste management planning
Environmental monitoring, reporting, and data analysis
  • National pollution control and sustainability programs
  • Public environmental awareness and outreach initiatives

(UN agencies, development banks, and donor-funded programs)

  • Sustainable development and infrastructure projects
  • Climate policy, mitigation, and adaptation programs
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives
  • Clean energy transition and green technology programs
  • Environmental project development, evaluation, and funding

The multidisciplinary nature of the program allows graduates to work at the intersection of engineering, policy, and sustainability across local and global contexts.

Accreditation

  • The University of Science and Technology at Zewail City is officially accredited by the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Key Areas of Study

The Environmental Engineering program provides an interdisciplinary foundation that combines scientific principles with practical engineering applications. Students engage with key areas that prepare them to address environmental challenges across technical, industrial, and societal contexts, including:

  • Environmental Engineering & Science - Applying chemistry, hydraulics, hydrology, ecology, and microbiology to pollution control and sustainable solutions.
  • Systems Engineering & Sustainability - Using optimization, cleaner production, life cycle assessment, and circular economy approaches.
  • Water & Wastewater Engineering - Designing and managing water supply, treatment, reuse, and desalination systems
  • Environmental Planning & Management - Conducting environmental impact assessments, supporting policy development, and implementing sustainable engineering practices.
  •

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Environmental Engineering program will be able to:

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems using principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Apply engineering design to develop solutions that consider public health, safety, welfare, and global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional responsibility in engineering practice and make informed judgments considering societal and environmental impacts.
  • Work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration and leadership.
  • Design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, and apply engineering judgment to draw valid conclusions.
  • Continuously acquire and apply new knowledge using appropriate learning strategies.

Graduation Requirements

To earn a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, students must complete 144 credit hours over a structured four-year study pathway that combines academic foundations, specialization, and practical experience.

Degree Structure
