Prof. Moustafa Samir Moussa
Biography
Prof. Moustafa Samir Moussa is Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Sustainable Development Center at Zewail City of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Egypt). He is a senior environmental and water expert with extensive experience in domestic and industrial water and wastewater management, solid and hazardous waste management, environmental project planning, and institutional and capacity development.
Over more than three decades, Prof. Moussa has played a leading role in the design and implementation of large-scale, high-impact programs in collaboration with international development partners. His work spans feasibility studies, applied research, policy support, and capacity-building initiatives across Egypt and the Mediterranean region. He has contributed to numerous flagship programs and initiatives, including IWSPI & IWSPII, ISSIP, ESRISS, WWDSS, H2020, ReWater MENA, Nile Delta Water Management (NDWM), and JCAR, among others. These initiatives were supported by major international financial institutions and development agencies such as the World Bank, KfW, EIB, EBRD, GIZ, ICARDA, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN).
Prof. Moussa obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering, with a specialization in nitrification processes in saline industrial wastewater, from UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the Netherlands.
His doctoral research was conducted within a multidisciplinary international consortium involving UNESCO-IHE, TU Delft, Shell Global, Ecco Tannery Holland, Heiploeg, and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, reflecting his long-standing engagement at the interface of academia, industry, and policy.
In addition to his professional and advisory work, Prof. Moussa is deeply committed to academic excellence and knowledge transfer. He teaches and supervises courses and research in wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, green economy, and sustainable environmental systems. A defining feature of his career is his ability to bridge scientific research and real-world application, ensuring that innovation translates into scalable, implementable solutions.
