Biography
Dr. Tamer Salem is a Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Zewail City of Science and Technology and serves as the Coordinator of the Molecular and Cell Biology concentration within the Biomedical Sciences program. He is also the Director of the Center for X-Ray Determination of the Structure of Matter (CXDS) and the Molecular Biology and Virology Laboratory (MBVL), where his research focuses on vaccine development, therapeutic recombinant viruses, virus-based gene delivery systems, and advanced gene expression technologies.
Dr. Salem received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Faculty of Science, Cairo University, and earned his PhD in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA. His academic and research training includes experience at internationally recognized institutions, including Michigan State University, the University of Florida, and Miami University.
Since the establishment of Zewail City in 2012, Dr. Salem has played a key role in developing academic programs and research infrastructure in biomedical sciences and biotechnology. His research is particularly centered on the baculovirus–insect cell expression system for high-level production of recombinant proteins, viral antigens, virus-like particles, and recombinant viral platforms with therapeutic and prophylactic applications.
In addition to vaccine antigen production, Dr. Salem’s work encompasses therapeutic virus engineering and virus-based gene delivery platforms for translational biotechnology. He maintains active collaborative links with vaccine and biotechnology companies, supporting applied research, technology validation, and translational development.
Dr. Salem is a full member of the American Society for Virology (ASV) and serves as a member of the Permanent Scientific Committee for Biotechnology and Modern Technologies at the Agricultural Research Center (ARC). He is also a board member of the National Biotechnology Network for Expertise (NBNE), contributing to strategic planning and capacity building in biotechnology.
