Prof. Mohamed Ghalwash
Biography
Mohamed Ghalwash holds a PhD in Machine Learning from Temple University (USA) and earned his BSc and MSc from Ain Shams University. With over 15 years of experience in AI and Machine Learning across both industry and academia, his research focuses on developing interpretable AI, discovering spatio-temporal patterns in complex data, and translating these insights into high-impact applications.
His work bridges foundational machine learning—with publications in NeurIPS, AAAI, KDD, and ICDM—and real-world challenges in healthcare, appearing in prestigious journals such as The Lancet, Diabetes Care, and Scientific Reports.
His contributions include novel frameworks for integrating domain knowledge into deep learning (CHIL), interpretable feature selection (BMC Bioinformatics), and advances in dynamic treatment effect prediction (ML4H) and disease progression modeling (ICHI).
Currently, Dr. Ghalwash leads and supervises a dynamic team of MSc and PhD students engaged in cutting-edge AI research, including cryptanalysis for information security, EEG analysis for brain–computer interfaces, federated learning, explainability, and quantum computing. His role involves not only imparting knowledge but also fostering an environment of innovation and research excellence.
Mohamed Ghalwash holds a PhD in Machine Learning from Temple University (PA, USA) and earned his BSc and MSc from Faculty of Science at Ain Shams University. With extensive experience in both industry and academia, Dr. Ghalwash specializes in developing novel AI and machine learning models to discover interpretable spatio-temporal patterns within complex data. His research focuses on healthcare analytics, health behavior, and clinical decision support, generating real-world evidence from medical data, wearable devices, and instrumented environments.
His excellence in research has been recognized through publication awards from Ain Shams University, multiple Patent Plateau Awards from IBM, and Best Graduate Paper awards from Temple University. Dr. Ghalwash has authored over 50 peer-reviewed papers in top-tier journals and conferences and holds eight granted international and US patents in AI and healthcare analytics. He currently serves as Co-PI on an STDF-funded project for developing AI models for novel vaccine design for foot-and-mouth disease.
Industry Leadership: Dr. Ghalwash brings over a decade of expertise in the software engineering industry, where he has led all phases of the project lifecycle for large-scale business applications. His career includes leadership roles as a Technical Team Leader at Asset Technology Group, a Java Architect at Raya Software, a Team Leader at NileSoft (IBM partner), and an instructor at Allied Consultant (Orascom partner). Most recently, as a Senior Scientist at IBM Watson Research Center (USA), he drove a strategic research agenda that introduced differentiating technologies into IBM’s healthcare and life sciences offerings. His work at IBM addressed a wide range of challenges, from disease progression modeling to novel therapeutic approaches for chronic diseases.
Academic & Research Contributions: Dr. Ghalwash previously served as a Research Assistant Professor at the Center for Data Analytics and Biomedical Informatics at Temple University. He is currently an Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University. He has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses and currently supervises a research group of MSc and PhD students. His team focuses on cutting-edge AI applications, including cryptanalysis and steganography for information security, EEG analysis for brain-computer interfaces, federated learning, explainability, and quantum computing.
